Here is the problem

After 93,000 miles, the upper rubber strut mounts get tired, meaning that the struts poke up too far into the car. When you go over bumps, the rubber cones don't fully control the movement of the top of the strut, meaning that you get less than perfect handling.

The object shown here is the top metal cap that keeps the strut from pulling out when the car is unloaded completely (tire off the ground) in front. It is a good 1/2" (12mm) from the top of the shock tower.
