Comparison of the old versus new strut bearing bushings.

You can see how on the old bushing (right) how the rubber is stretched oval. The loads on this part are not straight up and down, but at a slight angle, because of the caster of the front suspension. Caster is the effect you get by making the top pivot (the strut bearing here) further back on the car than the lower pivot (the ball joint on the bottom of the knuckle). This makes the strut lean backward at a slight angle, which helps the car self-center the steering.
