Note the odd valvesprings, wrapped like hairpins. It became a fashion for a while because of the reduced weight at the valve, but they have limits on speed and the harmonics of the spring are terrible. When engine speed became more of a factor of the materials in the con rods and the total weight of the valvetrain, the reduced reciprocating weight of the hairpin spring became a minor contribution, so the design was eventually abandoned in the 1950s, but not before Ferrari tried it on some of their F1 V12 motors.
