The Karlsruhe Schloss

The Karlsruhe Schloß was built in the mid 1700s to a baroque style. By this building period, Schloßes (palaces) were not built as fortresses, but as palacial residences for a ruling family. Karlsruhe was the seat for the GroßHerzog (Grand Duke) of Baden. The family stopped using it once Baden was assimilated with Wurtemburg to form the state of Baden-Wurtemburg, so the palace became a museum in the 1920s. It is well worth the trip. The "Gut Licht! (Good Light!) sign is a reference to the photography exhibit they have inside which mostly covers the period from around 1860 to the First World War.
