Triangulation is an efficient way of making a structure. Build a box, and it will twist into a diamond. X brace it with wire, into a series of triangles, and you have a strong structure, but at what price? the significant drag from all of these wires and turnbuckles used to tighten them is a real factor. These planes were really limited to 100-150 mph, or the drag became unmanageable, and soon the wings folded or tore away from their own aero forces
