Roman ruins under a modern building |
Current street level in Rome is as much as 18 feet higher than in Roman times. Where did the fill come from? All the masonry of destyed buildings when Rome was sacked. When it came time to rebuild Rome, the marble was stripped from buildings that had it, and the maasonry was collapsed. Once it tamped down, new buildings were built on top of the rubble, thus raising street level considerably.
