These stone kitties were carved 3,000 years ago in Egypt, and were brought back by the Romans.

Then as now, they were used as fountains, with passages carved into the kitty to pass the water through. The water flows from artesian wells, and is very sweet and drinkable, a testimony to the long history of the Roman's use of sewers to carry away waste and rainwater, which keeps the streets clean and the groundwater fresh.
