Tombs of the "Big Dogs" |
In the 1400s, Marco Polo opened trade with China with his dealings with Kublai Khan. "Khan" sounds a bit like "cane" (dog) in Italian, so in a word play on the two, those members of the Scavi family who traded with the Chinese, became known as the "Big Dogs" around Verona. You can see evidence of this in the monuments here, with dog themes on the tops of the statuary.
