Side mounted 6" guns

photo13.jpg

The Mikasa was built in the transitional period where ships still had broadside armament, but deck turrets as well. Later ships would forgo this side-mounted weaponry, concentrating on fewer, more powerful rifles mounted in turrets. Mid-size guns like these were moved high above the waterline to take on a dual role of anti-aircraft guns as well as anti-ship roles.
