This cannon is presumed to come from the Russian warship Diana, which was damaged by an earthquake in 1854 in Izu Shimoda harbor by the Ansei-Tokai earthquake. The Russian Vice-Admiral Euphimy Vasil'evich Putiatin had visited Shimoda City in order to negotiate a treaty between Japan and Russia. His ship, named Diana, spun 42 times during the tsunami by repeated incoming and outgoing waves. Diana was seriously damaged and finally sunk. The Admiral later finalized the Treaty of Shimoda on February 7, 1855. It marked the start of official relations between Russia and Japan.
