Why wooden shoes? In a wet country with the water table inches from your feet, you choose materials that don't absorb much wate, and are warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Leather and fabric would be soaked instantly, so wooden shoes are a decent alternative. Plus they are damn fashionable and are great for clogging up the works at French textile mills (where we get "sabotage" from, the french word for these shoes is "Sabot")
