Remains of the locks on the canal that bypassed the falls

George Washington himself helped promote and design this canal, which bypassed the worst of the falls on the Potomac. However, the canal had to drop considerable altitude, so a series of 5 locks was installed to help the boats drop the 75 or so feet to the lower river level below the falls.
