The gorgeous Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore

19th Century facade for the "Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore" (Duomo). Started in 1296, the cathedral was built on the site of an older cathedral (St Reparata), parts of which can still be seen from the basement crypt. The massive Dome was designed in 1420 by the Florentine master Brunelleschi, who is buried within the crypt here. It is the largest free-standing dome in the modern world, and the first monumental dome built since Roman times.

Here is a Movie of the Piazza around the Duomo.
