Guido Aretino (970 - 1050) |
Benedictine monk and musical theorist, probably born in Arezzo, Italy. He was a monk at Pomposa, and is supposed to have died as prior of the Camaldolite monastery of Avellana. He contributed much to musical science: the invention of the staff is ascribed to him, and he introduced the system of naming the notes of a scale with syllables.
