Michelangelo's Pietá |
Michelangelo's Pietá, (1499) the only work he ever signed. He carved his name into the sash across Mary's shoulders because people were attributing the work to others, and at the tender age of 24, he wanted to make an impression. The sculpture was attacked by a jealous Hungarian sculptor in 1972, who struck 15 hammer blows against it before being subdued. The chips were taken by spectatros to the horrible event, so marble was carved from the back of the statue and used t patch the damage, for a kind of "plastic surgery" for a statue.
