The display tomb of St Peter, under the altar of the St. Peter's Basilica.

The vault for St Peter. Once a year his bones are moved up here for a ceremony. He is actually buried underneath this chamber one level down. His burial place is beneath the altar, which is directly a level above this chamber. This is the same idea as Julius Ceasar, who is buried in a tomb beneath the altar of the temple in the Roman Forum. In actuality, this is probably not St Peter's bones, as he was only once in Rome, having moved to Babylon after Christ was crucified. These bones were found in the chamber below with an inscription to St Peter, therefore it was assumed that they were in fact his bones. As 900 years had passed since the death of the Saint, noone knew his fate, so they assmed the best and revere these bones as his.
