The driver side steering knuckle, once the strut us removed.

You can see the two holes that mount the strut to the knuckle. Also visible is the steering tie rod (right side of the picture) the lower control arm with the stabilizer bar (anti-roll bar) attached to it, and the drive shaft going to the transaxle. VWs are rear-steer cars, which means that their racks are behind the axle.
